Violence prevention and response training offered at DPS

With tragic incidents, such as the shootings at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook Elementary School, students, staff, police, and citizens recognize the importance of developing and training for the possibility of encountering a violent or deadly situation while in any type of school system.

In 2015, the SIU Department of Public Safety implemented free monthly Violence Prevention and Response training for students, faculty, and staff. The training is held at DPS (located in the lower level of Trueblood Hall) on the first Wednesday of every month between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. This training consists of a presentation, a viewing of the “Run, Hide, Fight” video, and discussion.

If you or your group are interested in attending this free training, please phone or email Lt. Kendall Hollister (kendallh@dps.siu.edu) or Officer Kevin Cox (kevinc@dps.siu.edu), (618) 453-3771. We expect sessions to fill quickly, so please contact us to reserve a spot for you or your group. Seating is limited to 20-25 people per session and will be first come, first serve.

Class dates: September 6, October 4, November 1, December 6, 2017

The first total solar eclipse over the U.S. since 1979 will reach its point of greatest duration just a few miles south of Carbondale.
